Derived from Convair 110, at the request of American Airlines that he needed a plane with greater capacity than the DC-3, the first Convair 240, later called Convairliner, entered service on June 1, 1948.

were built in total 176 copies in civilian version, but also the Convair 240 was used as a military transport plane, flying the first one for the Air Force of the United States on September 22, 1949.
